Keywords Filter

Learn how to steer the Lookalike algorithm to increase the relevance of your results with the Keywords filter

The Lookalike Search just got even more powerful with the new Keywords filter.

You can now guide the algorithm by adding specific words that describe a company’s products or services — helping you discover even more relevant lookalikes for your ideal customers.

What the Keywords Filter Looks For

The Keywords filter considers terms (up to three words long) that appear in descriptions of what a company does.

Ocean.io collects up to 100 keywords per company from reliable public sources, such as:

  • Company websites

  • LinkedIn company descriptions

  • LinkedIn specialties

For example, here are some keywords that might be extracted for IKEA:

furniture, home decor, lighting, sustainable design, interior solutions

These help the algorithm understand what a company offers — and allow you to find others that do something similar.

How to Improve Your Keyword Search

Not sure which keywords to use? Start with a Lookalike Search to get inspiration.

Step 1: Run a Lookalike Search

Begin by running a lookalike search for one of your existing customers or target companies.

For instance, search for ikea.com and open the company’s profile by clicking on its name.

Step 2: Review Keywords on the Company Page

On the company page, scroll down to view the keywords associated with that company.

Use these terms as inspiration for your search — they’ll give you insight into how Ocean.io categorizes similar companies.

Step 3: Apply Keywords in Your Search

Click on "Add to search" if they're relevant, to only show companies that also have these keywords. By default, the filter is applied so that at least one ("Any of") of the keywords added, need to be present in the results. If you wish to make it more strict, select "All of" in the filter.

Step 4: Exclude Irrelevant Terms

If you notice companies that aren’t relevant, go to their Keywords and click "Exclude from search" on any of the keywords that you think are disturbing your search results.

You can write out the keywords you wish to exclude in the keywords filter, as per the screenshot below.

Summary

The Keywords filter helps you:

  • Guide the lookalike algorithm toward your ideal customer type.

  • Discover companies offering similar products or services.

  • Exclude irrelevant matches for cleaner, more accurate results.

By combining the Lookalike Search with the Keywords filter, you can build hyper-targeted lists faster — and with more confidence in the quality of your results.
