Active segmentation: choose what Discovery and workflows use

Your active segmentation is the one Ocean opens by default in Discovery and uses in workflows, search, and the assistant, and you can change it from Context studio.

You can have more than one segmentation, but only one is active at a time. The active segmentation is the one Ocean uses by default, so it is the one you see when you open Discovery and the one the "Segment fit" workflow step scores against.

What "active" means

  • It is set for your whole organization, not per person. If a teammate changes it, you see the change the next time the page loads.

  • Only a finished segmentation can be active. Drafts, segmentations still building, and failed ones can't.

  • In the left rail of Context studio, the active segmentation has a blue "Active" tag and sits at the top of the "Segmentations" list.

How to make a segmentation active

  1. Open Context studio.

  2. In the "Segmentations" list, hover over the segmentation you want and select the three-dot button on its row.

  3. Select "Make active".

The "Active" tag moves to that segmentation. The option isn't in the menu for the segmentation that is already active, or for one that isn't finished. If the change can't be saved, you see the message "Couldn't set active segmentation". Try again.

The "Make active" button in the Models tab of Discovery is a different thing. It switches which scoring model a segmentation uses, not which segmentation is active.

What follows the active segmentation

  • Discovery. Opening Discovery from the left menu shows the active segmentation. To look at another one without changing the active one, open it in Context studio and select "Open".

  • The "Segment fit" workflow step. A step you haven't set to a specific segmentation scores companies against whichever segmentation is active when the workflow runs. If you pick a segmentation in the step's "Segmentation" field, the step stays on that one.

  • The "Segment lookalikes" filter in search. It lists the segments of the active segmentation.

  • The assistant. Chat and the Ocean.io MCP connector for AI assistants read your active segmentation with the "Get active segmentation" tool. It returns the segments with their win rates and deal figures from your CRM, when your CRM is connected and a segment has enough closed deals.

Some workflow steps don't follow it. The "Recommendations" and "Companies from segment" steps work on the segmentation chosen in the step, so switching the active segmentation doesn't move them.

What happens when you switch

  • Discovery shows the new segmentation's segments and tiers the next time you open it. Its recommendations may take a short while to build.

  • If a CRM is connected and the segmentation isn't limited to specific pipelines, Ocean matches your CRM companies to the new segmentation's segments and recalculates each segment's CRM figures, such as win rate and average deal size. This runs in the background, so those figures can take a while to update.

  • Workflow steps and searches that follow the active segmentation use the new one from then on.

  • Nothing is deleted. You can still open the previous segmentation from Context studio, and you can make it active again at any time.

  • If you archive the active segmentation, Ocean makes your most recent finished segmentation active.

When you have only one segmentation

The first segmentation to finish becomes active on its own, so there is nothing to set. A later segmentation does not take over. It becomes active only if you don't have an active one, so with a second segmentation you choose when to switch.

If you have no active segmentation but have a finished one, Discovery and the assistant fall back to your most recent finished segmentation. The "Segment fit" step does not. It needs an active segmentation, and its panel shows "No active segmentation" until you have one.
