The Industries (Ocean.io) filter helps you identify companies based on the industries they belong to.
This filter allows you to include or exclude companies that match specific industry categories or tags, so you can better target the types of businesses that are most relevant to your search.
How It Works
Every company in Ocean.io is automatically assigned one or more industry categories and industry tags.
These assignments are generated by Ocean’s proprietary AI system, which reads and analyzes company websites and LinkedIn pages. Using natural language processing, the system determines what each company actually does and assigns the most accurate industry information possible.
You can use this filter to:
Select whether the company should match Any of or All of the chosen tags.
Include specific industries or exclude those that are not relevant to your target audience.
Industry Categories and Tags
Industry categories are broad areas of business, while industry tags describe more specific segments within those categories. An industry tag could be present in multiple industry categories.
Examples of industry categories:
Agriculture and Farming
Data and Analytics
Software
Examples of Industries (Ocean.io) (subcategories within industry categories):
eSports (under Gaming and Sports)
e-Learning (under Software and Education)
Retail Technology (under Software and Commerce and Shopping)
This structure lets you narrow your targeting from general industries down to more specialized business areas.
When to Use This Filter
The Industries (Ocean.io) filter is useful when you want to:
Focus your search on companies within specific industries.
Exclude industries that are not relevant to your campaign or outreach.
Refine your existing list to highlight companies that fit your target sectors more closely.
However, for the most accurate and detailed targeting, we recommend using Lookalike filters. Lookalike filters analyze companies at a deeper level, focusing on what they actually do rather than just which industry they are categorized in.
You can use both filters together:
Start with Lookalike filters to identify the most relevant companies.
Add Industries (Ocean.io) filters to further refine your list or exclude industries that do not match your ideal customer profile.
This combination helps you guide Ocean’s algorithm toward the types of companies you truly want to find.
