When No Lookalike Results Are Found

Does your lookalike search yield no results? Learn more about what could be the cause in this article

Updated over a week ago

Our database is built around company websites. As we visit websites and teach our algorithm to understand what the company does based on the text it contains, our platform empowers you to find companies similar to your Ideal Customer Profile in no time.

Using the perfect domain as a base for your lookalike search is a matter of trial and error, and sometimes, the search might not yield results.

πŸ’‘ Tip: We generally recommend not to waste time getting stuck on domains, but to experiment with other domains first.

Still curious? To understand the error messages better, this article outlines what could have gone wrong.

Company website is new to Ocean

If you fill out the name of a company that is new to our system, you'll see this message:

In that case - fill out the entire domain (which will bring up the message below) and hit "Enter" to let our system gather data on the domain on the fly.

You will see the following message while it's loading:

Lookalike domain doesn't work

If there are no results found, you will see the following message:

There are many explanations for why that could have happened. Examples are:

The code is not clean 🫧

Have you ever looked at a website's source code? That's what our system is actually reading, not the beautiful image-filled and colorful website that you and I see when we visit. If, underneath the surface, the code is very messy or uses extremely old languages, our system might not be able to read it.

There is not enough data to read πŸͺ«

Pointing back to point 2, our system reads a website's source code. If their website only consists of images, and/or barely has any text for us to read, it's hard to get a grasp of what they do.

They have a blocker set up 🚫

The website has a blocker set up, resulting in that no "machines" can read it. As it's a very costly implementation for a company, it rarely happens and when it does, it's usually reserved for very large companies only.

The language can't be read

Our system understands a wide variety of languages. If the website is only available in a language that is unfamiliar, you will get the following message:

We currently support the following languages:

  • Danish

  • Dutch

  • English

  • French

  • German

  • Italian

  • Norwegian

  • Spanish

  • Swedish

πŸ’‘ Tip: Sometimes, it's been a while since our system tried reading a website and failed to do so. If that's the case, you can force it to revisit the website for another attempt to read it. A button saying "Start manual recrawl" will show up.
