Signing in: login codes and trusted devices

Why Ocean.io sometimes emails you a code when you sign in, what "Trust this device and network" does, and what to do if the code doesn't arrive.

When you sign in with your email and password, Ocean.io sometimes asks for a code it sends to your email. This is a security check, not an error. This article explains when it happens, how to skip it next time, and what to do if the code doesn't arrive.

When you're asked for a code

Ocean.io asks for a code when you sign in with your email and password from a browser it doesn't know, on a network it hasn't verified for your account. It doesn't ask when either of these is true:

  • You've signed in from this browser before and chose to trust it (see "Trust this device and network" below).

  • You're on a network Ocean.io remembers for your account. A network here means your internet (IP) address. Ocean.io adds a network when you sign in from a trusted browser, or with a code and "Trust this device and network" selected. It keeps a network for 90 days after you last signed in from it.

Things that commonly bring the code back:

  • A new computer or a new browser

  • A private or incognito window

  • Cleared or blocked cookies

  • A new browser on a network Ocean.io doesn't remember, for example when you use a VPN, work from a new office, or travel

  • No sign-in from that browser for 180 days

Ocean.io can also ask for a code on a browser you trust if it sees many failed sign-ins for different accounts from the same network in a short time.

Trust is saved per account. If you have two Ocean.io accounts, each one asks for its own code.

Enter the code

After you enter your password, the "Verify your identity" screen opens and says where the code was sent. The email has the subject "Ocean.io verification code" followed by the code.

  • The code has 6 digits. Ocean.io checks it as soon as you enter the last digit.

  • It's valid for 30 minutes, and it works once.

  • If you ask for a new code, only the newest one works.

  • When the code is accepted, you see "Code verified." Select Continue to finish signing in.

If the code is wrong, you see "That code didn't match. Try again or request a new one." After 5 failed attempts in a short time, sign-in is locked for 5 minutes. Wrong passwords count toward the same limit, and so do wrong codes. While you're locked out, you see "Too many failed attempts. Try again later."

Trust this device and network

Under the code boxes there's a checkbox, "Trust this device and network". It's selected by default.

  • Selected: After your code is accepted, Ocean.io remembers this browser and your current network. You usually don't get a code on this browser next time. Each time you sign in from it, the 180-day window starts over. A remembered network is kept for 90 days, and Ocean.io remembers up to your 20 most recent networks.

  • Not selected: You sign in, but nothing is remembered. You get a code again next time.

If you sign in from a new browser on a network Ocean.io remembers, it trusts that browser too and doesn't ask for a code.

When you trust a browser with a code, Ocean.io emails you "New sign-in to your Ocean.io account". It lists the time, IP address, and browser. If it was you, you don't need to do anything. If it wasn't, select the link to reset your password.

Clear trust on purpose by changing or resetting your password. That removes every trusted browser and network on your account, so each one asks for a code again. Signing out doesn't remove trust.

Don't select the checkbox on a shared or public computer.

If the code doesn't arrive

  1. Check the address on the screen. It says "We sent a code to" followed by your email address. It must be an inbox you can open.

  2. Wait a minute, then check your spam or junk folder. Search for "Ocean.io verification code".

  3. Select "Request new code". You see "New code sent. Check your email." The button then waits 30 seconds ("Request new code in N seconds") before you can use it again.

  4. You can request up to 5 codes per hour for your account. After that, you see a message that you've made too many attempts. Wait and try again later.

  5. If you can't get the email at all, use another way to sign in that doesn't need a code (next section), or contact Ocean.io support.

Sign-in methods that don't use this code

  • Sign in with Google. On the sign-in page, select "Sign in with Google" under "or sign in with". Use the Google account that has the same email address as your Ocean.io account. A different address is treated as a new sign-up.

  • Sign in with SSO. If your organization has single sign-on, your identity provider signs you in. See "Two-factor authentication and single sign-on".

  • Two-factor authentication. If you turned on 2FA, Ocean.io asks for your second factor every time you sign in with a password. Trusting a browser doesn't skip it. See "Two-factor authentication and single sign-on".
